Q: What is the procedure for recording a deed?
A: See an attorney. After the deed is prepared and properly notarized, it can be recorded in the Register of Deeds Office. The deed can either be mailed to the Hyde County Register of Deeds Office, Post Office Box 294, Swan Quarter, NC 27885 or brought to the Register of Deeds located in the Courthouse in Swan Quarter. The fee is $8.00 for the first page and $2.00 for each additional page. Excise tax stamps are based on $2.00 per $1,000. value of the purchase price. Also, the grantee’s address must appear on the first page.

Q: What is the procedure for recording a deed of trust/mortgage?
A: See an attorney. After the document is prepared and properly notarized, the procedure is the same as recording a deed. The fee for a deed of trust is $12.00 for the first page and $2.00 for each additional page.

Q: How do I obtain a copy of my deed, deed of trust, power of attorney, agreement, etc.?
A: You may stop by the Register of Deeds Office to obtain a copy for a fee of 10 cents per page. You need to know the name the property is in and the approximate year it was purchased or recorded. For a deed of trust you need to know the grantor. For a power of attorney you need to know either the grantor or grantee and the approximate year of recording. You may also write the office to obtain this information. Written requests are answered as time permits.

Q: Can the Register of Deeds tell me who owns a specific parcel of property?
A: No. Contact the Hyde County Tax Office located in the courthouse in Swan Quarter, NC.

Q: Can you tell me if a piece of property has a lien on it?
A: No. You will need to consult an attorney. It is not legal for the employees of the Register of Deeds Office to perform searches.

Q: Can anyone access the information contained in the Register of Deeds Office?
A: Yes. All information in the Register of Deeds office is public record.
