The Honorable Lora M Byrd
Register of Deeds Hyde County

A Note From Lora M Byrd, Register of Deeds

Welcome to the Hyde County Register of Deeds web site. Hyde County (population 5,280) is located in Eastern North Carolina along the Intercostal Waterway and home to Lake Mattamuskeet and Ocracoke Island.

I have served as the Register of Deeds since being elected in 1978. Raised in Hyde County, I graduated from Mattamuskeet High School and Harbargers Business College. I have also completed several computer courses at Beaufort Community College and numerous schools from the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. I am also the Veterans Service Officer for Hyde County and serve on the Executive Board of the Greater Hyde County Chamber of Commerce.

Being very active in the North Carolina Association of Registers of Deeds, I have held several positions in the association such as committee chair, historian, secretary, treasurer, 2nd Vice President, President Elect, and served as President during the 2000-2001 term.

The Register of Deeds Office is governed by the North Carolina General Statutes and the law charges the Register of Deeds with the integrity, completeness, accuracy, and safe keeping of all public records recorded in the office. A register serves a four year elected term and serves as custodian and manager of a large amount of public records. I am committed to these responsibilities and enjoy serving all the people of Hyde County.
